Hosting & Server Management / Help in choosing web hosting
« Last post by mark on August 04, 2008, 10:47:35 PM »
 everyone,
I am sorry for possible offtopic, but I need your help in find new web hosting provider as soon as possible, because my current host (bluehost.com) is kicking me off, they say 'your account is using a lot server resources', but my website gets only about 200 visitors per day and my disk usage is 1500 MB (maybe they do not like that?)

Anyway, what would be your recommendations for getting reliable web hosting? Where are you hosting your websites? Are you happy with your providers?

I am now checking http://www.hosting24.com/ - offer looks very nice, but is it real that they can provide unlimited disk space?
I have contacted them about this question and they say something that "These days 500GB disk drive costs only $30 per month, so if some day we will run out of disk space we will simply add new 500GB disk drive with almost zero costs and you can continue uploading without any problems".

What do you think about it? Maybe things have changed in last 4 years? With my current provider I get only 2GB of disk space for $10 per month..
Any ideas and suggestions are much appreciated.

Home Routing and Switching / Re: Inter Vlan Routing with Same IP subnets
« Last post by mark on August 04, 2008, 10:44:22 PM »
If the respective subnets were subnetted, ie. VLAN A = 192.168.1.0 /26 and VLAN B = 192.168.1.64 /26 and IP Routing was enabled, then the routing between VLAN's would work.

Perhaps Seperate VRF' could be created and then use Route Distinguishers to separate one subnet from another however I have very little experience in this area and I have my doubts if this concept will work on a core Switch.

Home Routing and Switching / Inter Vlan Routing with Same IP subnets
« Last post by mark on August 04, 2008, 10:44:00 PM »
if you  have a core switch. It has Two valns . Vlan1 and Vlan2 . there is no intervlan routing configured. In these vlans same IP subnets are used. Is there any possibility to configure intervlan routing between these VLANS.

Videos / Daewoo DSD-9502T and DSD-9503T
« Last post by mark on August 04, 2008, 10:41:40 PM »
The new Daewoo DSD-9502T (80Gb) and DSD-9503T(160Gb) PVRs are now in the homes of Digital Spy users, so it's time to start a new thread.

It's a fully functioned dual tuner PVR.

My first impressions? The picture quality is excellent. It uses great firmware similar to the the Vestel machines - though I really don't think that this machine is a Vestel clone however. Just about everything is here, and seems to work. Easy to use epg that's there from switch-on. Auto padding. Commercial skip. Chase Play. Even archiving seems to be there. It has no fan - the only noise you hear is that of the hard-drive. Seems to cope well with my less-than-perfect signal. It doesn't continually buffer - but all you have to do is press the Time Shift button to start this. Keeps the machine quiet and cool.

What don't I like? The print's a bit small on the remote. That's it.

Budget machines really don't come any better than this at the moment. If you're looking to only spend between £90 and £140, I doubt that you'd be disappointed.

I bought mine for less than £100 from here

Tv / Freeview Problem
« Last post by mark on August 04, 2008, 10:40:16 PM »
This is a weird one!
With freeview box turned off, TV and DVD Recorder can tune into 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or AV1 from the DVD Recorder.
But when freeview box turned on TV can only get 2, 3, 4 or 5 or AV1 from the DVD Recorder.
When freeview box turned on have tried auto and manual program scans on TV but it never finds the BBC1 channel
Any ideas?
Thanks

PC Games / 2008 DS Ratings Prediction Game: Season 3
« Last post by mark on August 04, 2008, 10:38:21 PM »
Welcome to Season 3 of the DS Ratings Prediction Game!

ANYONE can play this game- even if you missed season 1 or 2, because everyone will start with 0 points. Many of you already have played in season 1 or 2 and know the rules. But just to remind people, here they are:

Rules
It is very simple. Every week you will have to predict the ratings to 10 main shows selected by myself. I'll try and select different types of shows to give a variety. If you have suggestions to put shows in the schedule, you can post them in the thread.

You will need to submit your predictions on the thread by a certain date which I will specify. If you do not submit your predictions by the deadline, you will be penalised accordingly. Once you submit your predictions, you can not change them.

Along with the 10 main shows, you will also need to predict 5 backup ratings. These backup ratings will help position people in the table who have the same main points- it is basically like goal difference. Backup ratings will also be used in scenarios where a main show is not broadcast, or is significantly altered from its initial schedule. If this situation arises, the 1st backup rating will be made into a main rating, and so on.

After we find out the actual ratings, each person will be given points for every show. The points system will work as following:

5 points= predicted rating is exactly the same as the actual rating
3 points= predicted rating is 0.1m-0.3m away from actual rating
2 points= predicted rating is 0.4m-0.5m away from actual rating
1 point= predicted rating is 0.6m-1m away from actual rating
0 points= predicted rating is more than 1m away from actual rating

New rule: There is a new feature this season called “Special Shows”. There will be 2 “Special Shows” each week. For these shows, you will get double points. For e.g. if you get a prediction bang on correct, you will get 10 points instead of 5 points. So, these shows are very important in terms of the game. Special shows will generally be harder shows to predict. Give extra time when predicting these shows, as it could potentially make a big difference in your position.

Each week, players will be ranked by points. Daily updates will happen, ending each week with a final update. There'll be a different table every week, so it doesn't matter if you missed a week.

There will also be a few other leaderboards:
- an overall Season 3 leaderboard by points
- an overall Season 3 leaderboard by weekly average (so it doesnt matter if you miss a week)

I hope everyone enjoys the game, and please don't take it too seriously!

Satelites. / Sky+ Frequently Asked Questions
« Last post by mark on August 04, 2008, 10:36:21 PM »
Why can't I pause any of my 'Other Channels'?
This is a software limitation. Sky, unfortunately, have never allowed for the other channels to be recorded, paused, or make use of any of the Sky+ features. it is unknown if such a feature is planned.

I cancelled my subscription to movies, for example, but Why can't I view my recorded programmes?
Sky+ encrypts the recordings you make, and basically looks at your subscription to see if you are entitled to view/record the programme. If you cancel your subscription, your recorded programmes become unviewable. The only
way to view the prorgammes again is to reinstate your subscription to the channel, for example Sky Movies or Sky
Sports. There is no way around this.

Where can I obtain a channel list for my box?
Digital Spy has a good list here.

How can I tell if my Sky+ box is new or refurbished?
The rule is that a new box comes in a white box with Sky+ branded on it, whereas a refurbished box comes in a brown box.

How can I tell what box I have?
Go to Services, choose 'System Setup' (option 4), then choose System Details (option 5), and look at your version
number, and comapre it to the table below.
Version number 9F20xx - Pace PVR1 (aka Pace BSKYB3000)
Version number 9F21xx - Pace PVR2 (aka Pace BSKYB3100)
Version number 4F20xx - Amstrad PVR2 (aka Amstrad DRX180)
Version number 9F23xx - Pace PVR2.5
Version number 9F22xx - Pace PVR3 (aka Pace TDS470N)
Version number 4F21xx - Amstrad PVR3 (aka Amstrad DRX280)
Version number 4E21xx - Thomson PVR3 (aka Thomson DSI8210)
Version number 4E20xx - Thomson Sky+ 160 (aka Thomson DSI6210)
Version number 4E30xx - Thomson Sky HD - (aka Thomson DSI8215)

How much can my box store?
The PVR1 and PVR2 boxes have a 40GB hard drive, which averagely can store around 20 hours of recordings. The PVR3 and PVR2.5 boxes, however, have a 160GB hard drive, but only 80GB is available for the user to use, the rest is for Anytime. Therfore, these boxes can store 40 hours of programmes. If you own a Sky+ 160 box, you can record approximately 80 hours of content.

Where can I get a new box from?
You have two options. You can either purchase one from Sky directly for £99 with £30 install, or buy one from an
independant supplier, for example Simply Digital, for around £140. You will also find a large selection of boxes on E-Bay.

Which box manufacturer is the best?
This varies from time to time. Overall, Pace are the trusted supplier, as people often find that Pace boxes are the
most reliable, and work the best. Thomson and Amstrad boxes can vary, and they both frequently switch between 2nd and 3rd places. If you want to be safe, get a Pace.

Sky+ has missed the start/end of the programme, what can I do?
If your box has not recorded the beginning/end of a programme, it's too late to do anything. But, to prevent this
from happening in the future, try and set something called the buffer to the end of the programme. You can do this
in Services then Sky+ Setup. The options are 'Add to start of recording' and 'Add to end of recording'.

My Sky+ box is crashing all the time, what can I do?
It is most likely the hard drive. You can either get Sky out for £65 to replace the box, or try and change the hard
drive yourself, but, it is possible that it won't be the hard drive, and could be a general box fault, or even the dish.

Can I use Sky+ features with Freesat from Sky?
Yes, but there is a charge of £10 per month for the service. You are better off getting the basic package from £15
per month, and getting the Sky+ subscription for free.

I've just had Sky+ installed, but the features aren't activated, what can I do?
Wait. The features can take up to 4 hours to appear, or, in some cases, up to a day. If you still don't have them the day after your box has been installed, give Sky a ring.

My Sky+ is stuck in standby, Help!
The hard drive has most likely gone. You will need to either replace the hard drive with a new one, or get Sky out
for a fee of £65. You can always try a full system reset to get the drive back, it sometimes helps:
Unplug box from the mains. Press and hold the two buttons either side of the select button, then plug back in while
holding the two buttons in, wait until the lights on the front of the box begin to spin backwards, then press the select button on the box, the record light will come on. The box will then perform the reset, and will go back into standby when finished. This procedure will wipe off all your recordings, but may just help to get your box working again.

I have lost quite a lot of disk space, when empty, my planner shows 85% free, when nothing's in there!
You will need to perform a planner rebuild by doing the following:
Press Services
Press 4, 0, 1 then select on the remote control, without looking at the screen.
Then, choose option 7 from this menu (Sky+ planner rebuild), and press select, then the rebuild will recover the lost space. Your box will reboot when finished.

What is 'System Health Check'?
This is a new feature implemented by Sky, which helps Customer Service reps find the problem with your box, should you call up. Your PIN will not work, Sky have to generate the code for you. There is nothing useful in there for you, so don't try and get in.

Does my box record in standby?
Yes. Just don't unplug the box, and all recordings will still be made.

When will my box receive the latest software update?
If you have just had Sky+ installed, your box will automatically update to the latest software within the next few days. If you have had it weeks, and it is definately not on the latest software, try a force download. This will not wipe your recording's:
Unplug box from mains
Plug back in, while holding BACK UP on the front of the box.
Wait until all 4 lights come on, then release back up and the software will be updated.
It usually takes around ten minutes.

If you have any other problems, please remember to search the forums first!

Cisco IP Communications / Re: Why go IP Telephony
« Last post by mark on August 04, 2008, 10:34:47 PM »
Here is my quick take on the subject.

Plus's
- Centralized Server based Call Processing (no need for multiple legacy PBX's at each site and paying for upgrades/features on a site by site PBX basis)

- High availablity with cluster's (Cisco CallManager subscriber's) including instant failover should you lose a CCM. You dont see PBX's doing this.

- Disaster Recovery, VOIP in general makes disaster recovery plans and procedure's easier if recovering telephony is in the project scope.

- Internal dialing, for business's that do not have the feature currently available this can be a large cost savings (user to user direct dialing across multiple sites that you currently have a data network in place)

- SRST, should a remote site lose connectivity they can still make calls via SRST. This is a pro to using a Cisco solution.

- Scalability, compare with the high cost of adding set's to a legacy PBX ie nortel, purchasing shelf's, cards etc

- Moves, add's, changes also known as MAC work can be a huge savings for business that do not currently administer their own voice network. Some vendors currently charge in excess of $100 per/hr. Also worth noting for business's that do administer their own voice network, there can be a HUGE savings in labor. The amount of time it takes to move a legacy phone vs the plug and play move on a VOIP system can add up to huge saving's quickly. You can anyone move the phone, no need to go do it yourself  The savings scale to the size of the business and the amount of MAC work done.

- Greenfield cabling costs reduced. No need to run mutiple cables per station.

- Integration. Cisco Meetingplace etc.

I would also suggest reading http://www.ciscohq.com/forums/cisco-voip-ip-communications/t-voip-top-5-myths-18.html

These are a couple of my thoughts at the moment and just the tip of the iceberg.

Myself I feel the big question is why someone is not using VOIP

Cisco IP Communications / Why go IP Telephony
« Last post by mark on August 04, 2008, 10:34:16 PM »
For some one that is looking for  arguments on why one should go IP Telephony.

Pros: (or cons depending on how you read)

* New system cost savings - This is only on a new system
* Add, moves, changes - Minimal cost savings
* Features - ? I haven't seen many "exciting" features from an IP Telephony system yet. i.e. until recently you couldn't even do Night Switch on CCM. Cisco's IPT features =< 100. Standard PABX =<1000
* Scaleability
* Single cable

Cons:

* Large cost in upgrade (i.e. replacement handsets)
* Learning curve
* Uptime issues
* Emergency services
* Cable upgrades
* Analog services (FAX, Lift)
