Cisco Routing and Switching / Can't find Telnet in Vista?
« Last post by admin on October 27, 2009, 01:08:03 AM »
I figured someone else might come across this problem, so hopefully this information will help. I was trying to diagnose a problem with my Dad's email account, and in doing so, wanted to try to Telnet to the mail server to get more information about the problem. It sounded like a straightforward thing to do, but it seems Vista doesn't recognize the 'telnet' command. By default, Vista doesn't come with Telnet installed, so here's how to get it.

Go to 'Start->Computer' and then click 'Uninstall or change a program' that should be on the button bar at the top. Then click 'Turn Windows features on or off' and after you click 'Continue' on the security prompt, you should see a list of components. Scroll down to 'Telnet Client' and check it. When you click 'Ok' it will install it for you and you should be all set to Telnet to your hearts content.

I have tryed this

- Open Network and Sharing Center
- Under Sharing and Discovery, turn on Network discovery

As originally configured after I installed Vista, that was set to off.

According to the help text for "What is network discovery?":

There are two network discovery states:

On

This state enables you to see other network computers and devices from your computer and enables people on other network computers to see your computer. You can also access shared files and devices on other computers and other people can access shared files devices on your computer.

Off

This state prevents you from seeing other network computers and devices from your computer and prevents people on other network computers from seeing your computer. You cannot access shared files and devices on other computers and other people cannot access shared files and devices on your computer.
After turning on network discovery, I was able to access my Mac via \\<computername>\<username>. Both were case sensitive (in my case, <computername> was all uppercase.

I have to confess, I was expecting something called "Network discovery" to restrict whether my computer was visible on the network, not whether or not other computers on the network would be visible to me. Ah, c'est la vie.

Community News & Chat / Question for International Members
« Last post by mark on August 04, 2008, 11:00:06 PM »
Following on from my name change thread I'm interested to know if our .com domain name is having a negative impact on international traffic.

So before you joined...

Did you assume the site was for us or UK visitors only?

Does it stop you from entering competitions as you assume they don't include you?

Do you think it bothers others thinking of registering from your country?

Did it bother you in any other shape or form?

Thanks.

Computer Articles & Guides / Installing Apache for Windows
« Last post by mark on August 04, 2008, 10:56:39 PM »
this is my first tut so be nice if I screw it up. In this tut i'll be showing how to install Apache onto a windows machine complete with PHP and MySQL.

1. We'll using a pre-compiled package called WAMP. This will auto install Apache, MySQL and PHP, plus phpmyadmin. Download is here: http://www.wampserver.com/en/download.php

2. Launch the installer and follow the prompts. The installer should ask you if you want it as a service so its starts by itself, tick if you want. Then specify the webroot dir (just click OK for default). A box should pop-up looking for explorer.exe , this is because the WAMP launcher wants to know browser to use for it admin tool. Click OK for IE or browse to your alternative browser directory and exe file. When done click the tik box to start WAMP now and click finish.

3. Your firewall ask you questions about the starting services, do what you normally do to allow access

4. You should notice a new icon in your clock area, left click on it for access to admin tools.ATTENTION!!! by default mysql has no password set you must set it straight away .Go to phpmyadmin and wait for it to load.

5. In phpmyadmin click privileges, look for the user "root" on the host "localhost". Click the picture of a man with a pencil, it should come up with a edit page, scroll down till you find change password. Fill out that stuff, save and then close the browser.

6. The config of phpmyadmin is set so that auto logs in with no pwd, we need to change this. Go to your wamp directory, look for www and then phpmyadmin. Delete everything there and download this: http://home.swiftdsl.com.au/~callum_...phpmyadmin.rar .
Extract it into the phpmyadmin folder.

Done! If you want anything else covered just reply and I will be happy to help. Next I will show you how to use virtual hosts and password protect items!

Cisco Hardware / Kiwi Cattools For Cisco Hardware, Anybody use it?
« Last post by mark on August 04, 2008, 10:53:06 PM »
Hey guys (and gals, of course!),

I'm looking at starting a project to get the configurations on our routers and switches backed up on a regular basis (eeek...they're not backed up at ALL now!!!) and I'm looking at tools that are not expensive and will allow for automated backups so that we can be sure that we are keeping an up-to-date repository. I found this tool as freeware:

http://www.dirfile.com/kiwi_cattools_service_edition.htm

I remember hearing some good things about it a while back, but I was wondering if any of you packet-heads out there had any experience with it. These are production systems, so I'm going to have to work hard to prove that any tool we use is not going to cause any harm.

Thanks!

Computer Games and Consoles / Paper Mario series
« Last post by mark on August 04, 2008, 10:50:17 PM »
Even though these games will never be able to top off Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars for SNES... yet, I'm psyched to see more of what Miyamoto and Iwata have up their sleeves for the next Paper Mario (if that is...).

I finally completed Super Paper Mario for the Wii. It wasn't too shabby. Although, I should warn that I might uncover some spoilers. I was a bit disappointed, however, that they didn't include RPG battle scenarios like the ones used in The Thousand-Year Door and the original, which would've made the game 10 times better imo. There was very little or none of strategic moves I could use to fight the villains in the game. All Mario had possessed was a basic run and jump in the game which wasn't all that thrilling, again, which goes back to my point about going into an actual battle. There was also the 3D-2D flip move, which became a nice feature at first but then got old and irritating for a bit throughout the entire game. After getting the fourth or fifth pure heart, the game became a drag. But the ending sure made up for it.

I have a strong interest in the storyline and the love setting between Blumiere, also as Count Bleck and Timpani (Timpi) was absolutely heartwarming and sad to see. I especially liked how during the game, each time I won a pure heart; I get a piece of the missing storyline puzzle which raised a lot of questions and the ending came all together with the answers, which made a spectacular finish. It's too bad they didn't show Timpi's true human form, but I think they wanted her figure to be unknown as a way of leave and let be, which was OK. The sacrifice between Blumiere and Timpi was saddening to see and knowing if they were still alive or not was uncertain but it had a nice touch to it. Of course, after the credits they show the two together on a hilltop at a large distance.

I recommend this to play.
